Stakeholders Engagement between with Management of LAWMA - Collaborative Efforts for Enhanced Waste Management

On February 6, 2024, Hon. Noheem Babatunde Adams, the Majority Leader of Lagos State House of Assembly and member representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1, led major stakeholders from Lekki Peninsula on a working visit to the Managing Director of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin and his management team. On the team was Alhaji Sulyman Bello, the President of LERSA and members of the LERSA EXCO as well as Environment Committee. Dr. Yinka Ogunsuyi led the Executors Group. 

Objectives of the engagement:

1. Enhancing the quality of services for residents and stakeholders in the Lekki Peninsula.

2. Addressing the issue of indiscriminate refuse dumping on the median and empty spaces of the Lekki Peninsula.

3. Addressing the fluctuating tariffs of PSP operators.

The session provided a platform for stakeholders to voice their concerns and experiences with PSP operators in the Lekki Peninsula. Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, MD of LAWMA appreciated the visit and expressed LAWMA's commitment to collaborating for an improved waste management system in the Lekki Peninsula. He emphasized the need for collective and cooperative efforts to effectively address waste challenges in the region.

Stakeholder comments focused on the importance of:

1. Deployment of additional logistical resources to beef up current capacities.

2. Establishing an enforcement team to combat refuse dumping on medians.

3. Ensuring accurate price rates from PSP operators.

4. Implementing proper regulation of PSP operators to ensure optimal service delivery.

5. Utilization of the justice system to entrench enforcement.

6. Other profound solutions to arrest the challenges of waste management on the Peninsula.

In his closing remarks, Alhaji Sulyman Bello pledged a renewed collaborative approach to the relationship between LERSA, LAWMA and the residents/stakeholders of the Lekki Peninsula. He however solicited for continued unfettered access to the relevant members of the LAWMA Management Team.
